WHAT WE DO

Barrios Orquestados is a social project of an educational and artistic nature, which pursues the children’s and their families’ social inclusion and development in places where the cultural sector is either insufficient or does not exist.

In the orchestras and choirs that we create, our members and the community reinforce their values, become bonded and commit themselves to individual and group goals. Music is the common storyline of the process.

The orchestras of Barrios Orquestados are made up of stringed instruments (violins, violas, cellos, and double basses) and woodwinds (flutes, clarinets, alto and tenor saxophones). In addition to the small orchestra in each neighbourhood, there is a student choir and a choir made up of family members.

All learning is done in a group and relies on oral communication: the use of the instrument and musical learning in all its dimensions, including work with rhythm, sound number and dynamic tone.

Tuition is free of charge. Our principles are the love of music and the sense of belonging.

We have 10 centres in Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Tenerife, where we work weekly on musical training. Once a month, we hold meetings, where we showcase the work of the neighbourhoods of each island.
